Elaine Follows the Trail of a Phantom Thief Who Vanished Six Years Ago

The central premise begins with the phantom thief Raven, who disappeared six years before the game's main story.

Elaine sets out to reopen the cases connected to that criminal. Rather than staying in one city, she travels with her partners through multiple towns across a small European country at the end of the 19th century.

Her initial goal is to get closer to the truth behind Raven's identity and past activities. The investigation becomes much more complicated when new murders begin occurring along the way.

The mystery therefore turns toward a larger question: what connects the phantom thief's old cases with the deaths happening in front of Elaine now?

Steam describes the hidden truth as something that gradually emerges as individual cases are solved.

Investigation Is More Than Simply Reading Dialogue

Although BitterSweet is presented as a narrative visual novel, its official description goes beyond conversations and text choices.

Players are expected to search crime scenes, question witnesses, collect clues and identify the true culprit.

That structure gives each mystery an investigation layer before the player can reach a conclusion.

Screenshots released by the developer also show dialogue interfaces, multiple locations and scenes directly associated with examining evidence.

With Elaine written as a rookie detective, the mystery progresses through both what other characters reveal and what the player personally uncovers during an investigation.

The total number of cases, complete playtime and official number of endings have not yet been detailed for the finished game.

The Late 19th Century Defines Its Visual Identity

One of BitterSweet's strongest identifying elements is its setting.

ConsteRia places the story in a small European country during the late 19th century. Interiors, clothing, furniture, transportation and investigation spaces are designed around that historical atmosphere.

The setting also naturally complements the pairing of detectives and phantom thieves, both closely associated with classical mystery fiction.

Steam does not state that the country is a specific real European nation. It is therefore more accurate to describe the location as a fictional small European country rather than automatically treating it as London or another real city.

Steam user tags include terms such as Alternate History and Gothic, but those are community-defined tags rather than official genre classifications from the developer.

The Demo Now Includes Full Japanese Support

The demo received an important update in 2026.

On January 12, 2026, ConsteRia published a major update to coincide with Steam Detective Fest, adding full Japanese support to the playable demo.

A language selector was added directly to the title screen, allowing players to switch without changing external Steam settings.

The update also polished visual effects and presentation while revising existing English and Traditional Chinese text.

Steam now lists interface and subtitle support for English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese.

Indonesian is not currently listed, and Steam does not show full voice audio support for any of those three languages.

From Kickstarter to an Still-Unscheduled Full Release

The project has been in development for several years.

ConsteRia brought BitterSweet: Detectives' Tea Party to Kickstarter from July 18 through August 17, 2023.

The campaign received HK$70,857 from 198 backers, exceeding its HK$65,000 goal.

ConsteRia's itch.io profile describes the developer as a Hong Kong game-development team with Yin as its sole member.

Development continued after crowdfunding, with Japanese localization, demo revisions, a Steam trailer and regular progress posts all appearing by 2026.

One major detail remains unresolved, however: the full game's launch date.

Steam continues to list its planned release as “To be announced,” so no official year, month or day should currently be treated as confirmed.

Why This Matters

1) The mystery runs across past and present cases

Elaine investigates crimes connected to Raven's past while facing murders in the present, allowing information from both timelines to potentially illuminate the larger mystery.

2) Investigation is an active part of the visual novel

Players do more than follow conversations: they examine crime scenes, question witnesses, assemble clues and identify suspects.

3) The 19th-century setting gives the project a strong identity

Character and environmental design draw from classical mystery aesthetics without locking the story to a specific real country.

4) The demo is playable before a release date exists

The full game remains undated, but players can already test its investigation structure and English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese localization through Steam.

Closing

Its late-19th-century setting and investigation systems give the project a more specific identity than a purely dialogue-driven visual novel.

The finished game still has no announced price or launch date. For now, the Steam demo offers an official way to sample its investigation systems and English, Japanese and Traditional Chinese localization while ConsteRia continues development.
