A New Date after the May Delay
Ex Sanguis was originally scheduled to enter Early Access on May 21, 2026. Lightbulb Crew held several playtests before release to examine its tutorial, combat flow, balance, and progression.
The volume and value of the resulting feedback led the team to delay the launch into the third quarter. The developer chose to improve the game’s foundations rather than maintain the earlier date.
September 10 is now listed across the Steam page and new trailer. A launch time, regional prices, and an introductory discount have not been announced.
Windows PC through Steam remains the only confirmed platform. No PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or alternative PC storefront edition has been revealed.
Manipulating Turns through Timeline Effects
Combat places every participating unit on a shared timeline. The order does not remain fixed, because players can manipulate it through Timeline Effects.
Specific abilities can:
- accelerate a Stilla’s next turn
- delay an enemy action
- exchange the positions of two units
- push an opponent farther down the timeline
- prepare several attacks before an enemy can respond
These tools allow one action to trigger a broader sequence. A player might weaken an enemy, force it into a vulnerable position, and complete the chain with another Stilla.
The mechanic develops ideas previously used by Lightbulb Crew in Othercide, while adding broader environmental and spatial interactions.
The Battlefield Is Part of the Plan
Objects around an arena are not purely decorative. Some can explode, damage nearby enemies, or spread fire.
Players may also obstruct lines of sight, control pathways, and force enemies to change position. Facing and placement matter because attacks from particular directions can gain flanking advantages.
Knock-backs can send enemies toward hazards or place them beside an object ready to detonate. Forced-facing effects expose vulnerable angles.
Damage-over-time abilities apply pressure across several turns, while timeline manipulation can ensure those effects resolve before an enemy heals or retaliates.
Victory therefore depends on more than selecting the largest damage number. Turn order, direction, distance, and environmental conditions all contribute to each encounter.
The Stillae Fight for a Dying World
Players command the Stillae, elite warriors born from the Sanguis of a divine figure called the Mater.
They carry the remaining hope of a world drained by the Purge. The forces of Stasis represent perfection and stillness, while blood symbolizes life continuing to resist.
The art direction combines monochrome surroundings with vivid red. Blood introduced during combat stains the black-and-white world and reinforces the conflict against stagnation.
Violence therefore functions as both a visual effect and part of the setting’s narrative identity. Every wound adds color to a place stripped of life.
The individual Stillae, the Mater’s complete relationship with Stasis, and the wider history of the Purge have not yet been fully explained.
Choosing Risk during Each Run
The roguelite structure allows players to decide how they move across the map.
They may immediately pursue a boss, select dangerous missions offering greater rewards, or spend more time gathering resources before taking on harder battles.
Standard missions become more difficult toward the outer edge of the map. Route selection determines the challenges, resources, and level of preparation available later in a run.
Defeat does not erase every form of progress. Each attempt can unlock forgotten abilities, restore memories, and create more options for the next expedition.
Players can revise the Stillae’s loadouts and names. New abilities also provide synergies supporting different squad builds.
Early Access Is Planned for at Least Six Months
Lightbulb Crew expects Ex Sanguis to remain in Early Access for at least six months, although the period may be extended according to development needs and player feedback.
The launch version is described as fully playable with its core mechanics and several hours of content. Some areas, features, and balance decisions will remain subject to change.
The path toward version 1.0 is expected to include:
- additional content
- improved balance
- new features
- performance improvements
- broader polish
- possible new game modes
The price is planned to increase gradually as content and features are released. Neither the initial price nor the final price has been revealed.
Feedback will be collected through Steam discussions, Discord, social media, and testing for major updates.
The Demo Is Available Again
The Ex Sanguis demo returned for Six One Indie Demo Days, an event running from July 31 through August 7, 2026.
It can be downloaded from Steam without purchasing the game. Lightbulb Crew has not confirmed whether access will end immediately after the event or remain open for an additional period.
The demo provides an opportunity to try the combat foundation, Timeline Effects, environmental interactions, and an early portion of its roguelite structure.
As it represents a development build, its content and balance may differ from the Early Access edition arriving in September.
Why This Matters
1) Turn order becomes an offensive tool
The timeline does not merely display the next action. Players can reshape it to construct combinations or interrupt enemy plans.
2) The environment offers tactical options
Explosions, fire, sight lines, facing, and knock-backs make positioning as important as character abilities.
3) Red has a narrative purpose
Blood represents life fighting back against a pale world and the forces of Stasis rather than serving only as an impact effect.
4) Community testing has already affected development
The delay from May gave the team additional time to apply player feedback before selling the Early Access version.
