Holy Shroom!, an indie game from GameWood, is scheduled to launch for PC via Steam on October 13, 2026. Each trip begins like a laid-back mushroom-foraging simulator: explore a photorealistic forest, locate productive spots, fill a basket, return safely, sell the haul and invest the money in better equipment.
Then the sun goes down. More mushrooms appear and the most valuable specimens become available, but the forest also fills with ghosts of lost mushroom pickers, monsters, aggressive animals and other strange residents whose behavior cannot always be solved simply by running away.

Trailer, Steam and Holy Shroom! Gameplay

Mushroom Foraging Drives the Game's Economy
Holy Shroom!'s basic activity is straightforward. Players enter the forest, hunt for mushrooms, learn where productive spots are located, fill their baskets and return with the haul.
Those mushrooms can then be sold, turning each successful trip into money that can be invested in better equipment for future runs.
GameWood summarizes the cycle as Explore → Collect → Sell → Upgrade → Return.
That means mushrooms are more than collectibles. Every specimen connects directly to progression and to the decision of when a run has become valuable enough to protect.
A player with a full basket can leave before sunset and secure the money. Staying a little longer, however, creates an opportunity for much rarer finds.
Night Offers the Biggest Rewards and the Greatest Danger
Holy Shroom! deliberately makes staying after sunset tempting.
At night, more mushrooms appear, they grow faster, and some of the rarest and most valuable specimens can only be found after dark.
That creates the game's central risk-versus-reward decision. Leaving early is safer, while remaining in the forest can dramatically increase the value of a run.
The same forest also becomes much more dangerous. Visibility drops, strange sounds appear, hidden encounters become accessible and creatures begin roaming the area.
Some are interested primarily in stealing the player's mushrooms. Others are trying to kill the player.
The tension therefore comes from a simple question: is one more promising mushroom spot worth risking an already valuable basket?
Different Creatures Demand Different Responses
GameWood does not describe every creature as a conventional enemy that should be handled in the same way.
Certain threats can be stopped or kept away with light.
Others are safer when the player continues looking directly at them, making line of sight part of survival.
Noise matters as well. Running, shouting or making too much sound can draw unwanted attention from creatures nearby.
That becomes especially relevant in online co-op, where Steam's system requirements note that a microphone is required for the in-game voice chat.
Creatures can also interact with each other. Monsters may chase, attack and fight other monsters, creating situations where hiding and letting the forest resolve its own conflict can be smarter than stepping into the middle.
Online Co-op Can Be Teamwork or a Fight Over Porcini
Holy Shroom! supports solo play, but online co-op is a major part of its premise.
Players can stay together, search different parts of the forest or help one another survive dangerous encounters.
Cooperation is not mandatory at every moment, however.
GameWood deliberately highlights the possibility of reaching the best mushroom spot before a friend and clearing it out first.
The developer sums up that dynamic with its own joke: friendship is friendship, but a porcini is a porcini.
One detail should be separated from Steam's tags. The store may display a user-defined “4 Player Local” tag, but GameWood's official game-mode information only confirms Single-player and Online Co-op. A maximum player count or local co-op mode should therefore not be treated as confirmed until GameWood explicitly announces it.
Horror Is Mixed With Deliberately Absurd Humor
Despite the ghosts, monsters, survival-horror systems and lethal encounters, Holy Shroom! is not presented as relentlessly serious horror.
GameWood explicitly includes absurd humor and co-op chaos in the intended tone.
Glowing mushrooms with unusual effects are one example. The player can even eat them, although the full consequences are not detailed in the early material.
That contrast fits the premise: a peaceful forest trip resembling a parent's weekend hobby can turn into complete panic in a matter of minutes.
The Steam description also jokes about the game's photorealistic ambitions. GameWood warns that weaker GPUs may struggle, then suggests that anyone who still wants a fully photorealistic mushroom-foraging experience can simply go into a real forest.
Holy Shroom! Is Being Built by a Two-Person Indie Team
GameWood describes Holy Shroom! as an independently developed project from a two-person team.
The studio says its goal is to combine the relaxing atmosphere of mushroom foraging with horror, humor and chaotic co-op interactions.
That compact idea is reflected in the game's design: a single everyday activity is pushed into two dramatically different moods depending on whether the sun is up or down.
Steam also carries an AI Generated Content Disclosure. According to that disclosure, AI is used for text translations and for creating individual graphics used for marketing and promotional purposes.
The disclosure does not state that gameplay generates AI content in real time, nor does it claim that all of the game's visual assets are AI-generated.
PC Requirements Start at a GTX 1060-Class GPU
The minimum specification lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, and a GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 580 8 GB.
Storage is listed at 30 GB, alongside DirectX 12 and broadband internet for online functionality.
The recommended configuration rises to an Intel Core i5-12400F or Ryzen 5 5600 paired with an RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 6600 XT.
GameWood also warns that its photorealistic visual target may result in weaker performance on lower-end graphics hardware.
Steam currently lists English only for interface, full audio and subtitles. Other languages, including Indonesian and Japanese, have not yet been officially listed.
Why This Matters
1) A relaxing activity becomes the foundation for survival horror
Rather than beginning with weapons or a monster-hunting mission, Holy Shroom! makes mushroom collecting the primary objective before the nighttime threat takes over.
2) Its risk-versus-reward loop is immediately understandable
The most valuable mushrooms appear under the most dangerous conditions, making the choice between staying and leaving economically meaningful.
3) Creatures offer more than simple chase behavior
Light, eye contact, sound and monster-versus-monster encounters create possible solutions beyond running.
4) Co-op has room for spontaneous stories
Teamwork, panic over voice chat, splitting up and racing friends to the best mushroom spot could all create unscripted multiplayer moments.

Closing
Holy Shroom! takes a simple mushroom-foraging activity and turns it into a risk-versus-reward survival game once the sun goes down. The longer players remain in search of more valuable fungi, the more likely a peaceful trip is to become a monster encounter or co-op disaster.
GameWood currently plans to release the game for PC through Steam on October 13, 2026 at US$5.99 with a 10% launch discount. A maximum co-op player count, additional languages, console versions and the exact duration of the launch discount remain unannounced.
