The M.A.H.O.U. Unit Must Climb the Tower of Babel
Kernel Hearts takes place in a world already approaching extinction as ash consumes what remains of civilization.
Players join the M.A.H.O.U. Unit, an elite force of super-powered android magical girls tasked with climbing the mythical Tower of Babel, eliminating the angelic creatures standing in their way, and ultimately dethroning God.
The game supports solo play or a squad of up to four players total.
Each celestial domain introduces its own enemies and boss guardian. Failure is part of the roguelike structure rather than a final endpoint, returning the Unit to its laboratory before the next expedition.
Attacks, Spells, Movement, and Powers Build the Combat Loop
Combat revolves around mixing several systems instead of following a single fixed combo tree.
Each run provides temporary powers that can modify or complement the player's attacks, spells, and movement, allowing different combinations to emerge as an expedition develops.
Those builds are then tested against regular enemies and the guardian waiting at the end of each domain.
Because temporary abilities change between runs, adaptation is a major part of progression.
Co-op adds another dimension by allowing squad members to build around one another rather than treating every player as an isolated damage dealer.
256KB of Skill Chips Provide Permanent Progression
Not everything disappears when a run ends.
After an expedition, the Unit returns to its latest memory backup in a laboratory near humanity's final stronghold.
Rewards earned during runs can be spent to unlock and equip skill chips through MAHOU.OS, with up to 256KB of capacity available for customization.
That creates a second layer of progression alongside the temporary roguelike powers.
Players can gradually establish a preferred permanent setup while still reacting to whatever abilities become available during an individual climb.
The Heavenly Curse Powers a Magical Transformation Mechanic
The Tower itself is more than a backdrop.
Its Heavenly Curse creates additional pressure during exploration, with stronger threats appearing if the squad spends too long in one area.
Players can also harness the Tower's own power to temporarily dispel the curse and trigger a magical transformation.
The transformation unleashes a powerful attack on nearby enemies and allows the Unit to assume its true magical form for a limited period.
That makes the magical-girl identity a direct combat mechanic rather than simply an aesthetic layer placed over the roguelike structure.
Relationships Continue Outside the Fighting
Each celestial domain also includes inhabitants who can become part of the player's journey.
The Unit can interact with those characters, give them gifts, and deepen its bonds with them.
Whitethorn's official description even leaves room for some relationships to develop romantically.
These interactions give Kernel Hearts a quieter RPG layer between its battles and upgrades, expanding the Tower beyond a sequence of combat rooms.
Fernet Joins Fortnite Through the Epic Games Store
The new release-date trailer doubles as the announcement of Kernel Hearts' crossover with Fortnite.
Beginning August 17 at 1:00 p.m. ET, an eligible pre-purchase or purchase of Kernel Hearts through the Epic Games Store grants the Fernet Outfit.
Fernet is the captain of the M.A.H.O.U. Squad.
The cosmetic can appear in the player's Fortnite Locker across connected platforms as long as the relevant console accounts are linked to the same Epic account.
Epic also confirms that the Fernet Outfit will become separately purchasable through the Fortnite Shop on September 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Refunding the qualifying Kernel Hearts purchase can also remove the granted outfit or the replacement V-Bucks benefit described in Epic's FAQ.
Why This Matters
1) Magical girls are being placed inside a co-op action roguelike
The project combines transformations, android heroines, and biblical imagery with real-time combat designed for up to four players.
2) Temporary and permanent builds coexist
Run-specific powers encourage improvisation, while the 256KB skill-chip system gives players a longer-term foundation to customize.
3) The Tower of Babel affects gameplay directly
Domain bosses, the Heavenly Curse, transformations, and floor-by-floor progression all tie back into the Tower rather than leaving it as background lore.
4) The Fortnite crossover starts before launch
Epic Games Store customers can receive Fernet roughly a month before Kernel Hearts itself becomes available.
