New Gameplay, Steam and Key Visual

Consoles Launch February 4, With Japan's Steam Release Set for February 5
The latest announcement replaces the previous early-2027 window with a firm date. Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 are scheduled to receive Muramasa: Revenant Blades on February 4, 2027 in Japan.
Steam requires a regional distinction. Marvelous' Japanese official site and press release explicitly list February 5, 2027 for the Steam release, which will be handled by Marvelous USA.
Marvelous Europe, meanwhile, markets the game as launching globally on Windows PC via Steam on February 4, 2027. The safest interpretation is therefore to keep those regional schedules separate rather than describe one Steam date as universal.
Steam itself still displays a general 2027 release window at the time of verification and currently allows players to wishlist the game.
Six Protagonists and Six Stories Are Now Part of One Package
The new version brings together the main Muramasa adventure and all of Genroku Legends / 元禄怪奇譚.
Its six protagonists are Kisuke, Momohime, Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki. Each has a different background, objective and fighting style while traveling through a Genroku-era Japan filled with spirits, monsters, dangerous humans and Demon Blades.
Their stories are independent, so players are not required to experience them in one fixed sequence. Marvelous states that the order is left to the player.
Global materials also say that all six stories are available from the start. This means the 2027 package no longer treats the additional tales as separate DLC in the way Genroku Legends was originally delivered for the PS Vita release.
Combat Is Refined Without Abandoning Fast 2D Action
The Oboro-ryu Yugiden video makes it clear that side-scrolling action remains the foundation.
Normal attacks naturally link into combinations and can be mixed with dashes and jumps to move quickly between ground and aerial combat. The attack button also handles parrying, while properly timed defensive actions can send certain projectiles back toward enemies.
Another major component is Secret Arts / 奥義. These special techniques range from powerful single strikes to wide-area and ranged attacks, and they can be woven into normal combos.
Players can register three Secret Arts for ground use and another three for aerial use. Repeated use can also raise proficiency and improve a technique's performance.
Global materials additionally state that more than 100 swords can be forged, preserving the series' obsession with Demon Blades while tying them into the expanded progression system.
Kisuke and Momohime Forge Blades While the Other Four Train
Progression is not identical across the six protagonists.
Kisuke and Momohime use forging with the swordsmith Muramasa to create new blades carrying different Secret Arts and broaden their combat options.
Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki instead use training. Training can unlock new abilities and create talismans that add effects to their bodies or weapons.
Both systems rely on Souls gathered from defeated enemies. Continued forging or training unlocks additional weapons, techniques and stat improvements.
That distinction reinforces the six-protagonist format: their identities differ not only in story and animation but also in how they build strength over the course of the adventure.
Hot Springs, Food, Fishing and Galleries Remain Part of the Journey
Between battles, the game retains the quieter travel elements associated with Muramasa.
Players can recover at hot springs, stop at restaurants for food or go fishing to earn money. Palanquin carriers can also take the party to destinations shown on maps already obtained.
The new release expands its archival side through several viewing modes. Picture Scroll / 絵巻 collects illustrations, Illustrated Catalogue / 図録 lets players examine character motion and backgrounds, while Reminiscence / 回想 allows previously seen journey events to be revisited.
Those additions are particularly fitting for a Vanillaware game, where hand-crafted art, animation and backgrounds are a major part of the appeal rather than simply scenery behind combat.
Classic Mode Preserves the PS Vita Gameplay System
One of the most notable additions for returning players is Classic Mode.
The mode includes the PS Vita version of Muramasa and Genroku Legends with their original game systems preserved, while upgrading only the graphical presentation to higher resolution.
That gives the 2027 package two distinct approaches. New or returning players can use the refined mechanics, while anyone interested in the older design can directly experience the PS Vita gameplay structure.
Classic Mode also makes this more than a straightforward high-resolution port. Vanillaware and Marvelous are separating the revised experience from preservation of the older systems instead of simply replacing them.
4K, English Voiceover and Physical Preorders
The technical upgrade is also substantial. The Japanese site lists 3840×2160 at 60 fps for Nintendo Switch 2 in TV mode and PlayStation 5, while Nintendo Switch is listed at 1920×1080 at 60 fps in TV mode.
Voice audio supports Japanese and English, while subtitles are listed for Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean. Indonesian is not currently listed.
In Japan, the Standard Edition is priced at ¥6,578, the physical Limited Special Edition at ¥8,778, and the Digital Deluxe Edition at ¥7,678. Physical preorders for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PS5 are beginning progressively, while the official website now hosts information on limited editions and retailer-specific bonuses.
Marvelous is also running a preorder campaign through September 24, 2026 at 11:59 PM JST. Users who follow @oboro_pr and repost the designated campaign post can enter for a chance to be one of six winners receiving an original hanging scroll featuring the game's main visual.
Why This Matters
1) Genroku Legends is finally integrated directly into the main package
All six stories are now positioned as one complete release rather than a base game followed by separate DLC.
2) The revised version does not erase the older experience
Classic Mode preserves the PS Vita systems, allowing players to directly compare them with the new combat and progression design.
3) Each protagonist has a distinct progression route
Forging for Kisuke and Momohime and training for the other four means their differences extend beyond story and animation.
4) A distinctive Vanillaware action RPG reaches a much wider modern platform lineup
Switch 2, Switch, PS5 and Steam bring the game back with up to 4K output and a new English voiceover option.
