Solo developer Takanori Toge (峠タカノリ) has offered a much deeper look at the philosophy behind SIKI (士機) in a new Game*Spark interview. Rather than simply combining mecha and bishōjo aesthetics, the game draws from a moe-military setting he has been developing for more than two decades.
The interview also outlines the next major Early Access update. Stage 2, set in Yūbari, Hokkaido, is targeted for release before the end of 2026 and will introduce the unusual “Fusion (Yuri)” mechanic previously listed in the full-version roadmap.

The Moe-Military Concept Goes Back More Than 20 Years
SIKI's setting can be traced to Toge's older web project Densan Rengō Kantai Teitoku Ōka (電算連合艦隊提督 桜花), where he was already combining military concepts with bishōjo characters in the early 2000s.
SIKI does not take place directly on the same timeline. Toge describes it as a parallel version of the same broader world, allowing the rules and classifications surrounding its humanoid machines to differ.
Within the setting, Shiki are frontline humanoid units capable of both combat and command. The Japanese name 士機 itself combines the idea of military personnel with machinery.
Character Design Is Tied Directly to the Lore
One of the interview's most distinctive revelations is that visual elements which could otherwise be read simply as fanservice are given mechanical purposes.
Shiki carry both biological and electronic brains, creating a considerable amount of heat. Coolant circulates through their bodies, while the thigh area functions as a radiator, explaining why it is kept exposed to improve cooling.
Toge similarly describes the characters' larger chest design as part of a buoyancy system. Their heavy internal frames could cause a downed unit to sink at sea, so additional buoyancy helps make recovery easier.
The same philosophy extends to combat effects. Toge deliberately emphasizes smoke and weight over excessive glowing projectiles because he wants the battles to retain a military feel.
The Arcade Shooter Hides a Darker Story
At surface level, SIKI is built around arcade satisfaction: destroy enemies and scenery, chase scores, and unlock bonus scenes.
Toge says, however, that two stories exist at once. One is the straightforward victory narrative, while the other asks whether the protagonist's actions are actually justified.
The opening UI states that an automatic retaliation mode is active, creating the possibility that the Shiki's home nation may already have been destroyed. Toge deliberately leaves that interpretation uncertain.
He also wants players to question whether some targets were truly enemies—or whether the protagonists themselves might be the invading force.
Stage 2 Moves the Battle to Yūbari
Toge is currently developing Stage 2 in Yūbari, Hokkaido.
In the older Ōka version of the setting, the area contains an underground humanoid-production factory. In SIKI's timeline, that facility has already been occupied by the enemy, and the player's mission will be to destroy it.
Each stage is intended to carry a distinct visual identity. Stage 1 leaned heavily on the blues of sea and sky, while Stage 2 is being designed with a more yellow-toned atmosphere.
The Hokkaido stage is currently targeted for release before the end of 2026.
“Fusion (Yuri)” Will Also Arrive in Stage 2
Another planned Stage 2 feature is “Fusion (Yuri)”.
Toge compares the idea to docking with the Parser in Star Force. It is not a transformation into one larger machine; visually, it is closer to two characters embracing or linking together.
Fusion gives the player two guns at once, increases firepower, and unlocks access to a special weapon.
Toge is also considering stages where the female opponent from Stage 1 becomes playable, offering weapon variety without building a completely free-form equipment system.
Early Access Still Has a Long Road Ahead
Steam currently estimates an Early Access period of around two years.
The present build contains one main stage and several bonus scenes, while the full version aims for roughly 5–7 stages alongside more weapons, destruction-focused content, additional story, photo mode, difficulty settings, and online rankings.
Toge also says he would eventually like to explore an adult version after the main game is complete. This remains only an idea; whether it would be a separate release or DLC has not been decided.
Why This Matters
1) The fanservice is tied to the worldbuilding
Toge deliberately assigns mechanical and military explanations to the characters' visual design, making appearance part of the setting rather than a completely separate layer.
2) The arcade structure hides an ambiguous conflict
Beneath the score-chasing and bonus scenes, SIKI raises questions about its enemies, the fate of the protagonists' nation, and the repeatedly recycled memories of humanoid units.
3) Stage 2 begins to show the scale of the Early Access roadmap
Yūbari, Fusion, a new visual palette, and possible additional playable units demonstrate how the current single-stage build may evolve into something much larger.

Closing
The latest interview shows that SIKI's development history is much older than the game project itself. Its bishōjo designs, military hardware, humanoid hierarchy, and mechanical justifications all grow from worldbuilding Toge has been developing for more than two decades.
The immediate focus is now Stage 2 in Yūbari and its Fusion system before the end of 2026. SIKI remains far from its final version, with an approximately two-year Early Access roadmap and several major features still planned.
