Hello Sunshine has returned with a new story trailer shown during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2026, with Red Thread Games' survival mystery RPG now scheduled to launch in 2027. The new window moves the game beyond its earlier 2026 target.
Its central idea remains immediately distinctive: players are the Final Employee of the collapsed Sunshine corporate empire, following a giant war machine toward an impossibly tall white tower at the end of the road. The robot is more than a travelling companion—its shadow protects the player from lethal sunlight during the day, while its mechanical warmth becomes a lifeline once the desert freezes after sunset.

Story Trailer, Steam and the Nomad's Journey

The New Story Trailer Puts the Nomad-Robot Relationship Up Front
The newest trailer spends more time on the relationship between the Nomad and the giant machine walking across the wasteland.
Their partnership does not begin as a friendship. Red Thread Games explains that the colossus barely acknowledges the player at first. It starts walking when the sun rises, and the Nomad is responsible for keeping up.
That dynamic gradually changes as players perform repairs and install upgrades. New forms of interaction become available, with the robot eventually helping locate hidden objects, lift the player across obstacles, provide protection and fight aggressive machines.
The 2026 story trailer further reinforces just how dependent the Nomad has become on the machine. The character openly acknowledges that survival would be impossible without it.
At the same time, the robot's identity and the reason it continues toward the distant tower remain major pieces of the game's mystery.
The Robot's Shadow Is a Lifeline During the Day
One of Hello Sunshine's defining systems is the way it turns sunlight into a direct survival hazard.
When morning arrives, the giant robot starts moving. The shadow cast by its body becomes the Nomad's protection from deadly heat and radiation.
Players can still leave that shadow to search abandoned settlements, military stations, storage units, supply drops and destroyed machines away from the robot's route. The farther they travel, however, the greater the danger of exposure.
That creates one of the game's key survival decisions: more valuable resources may lie outside the safe route, while the robot does not necessarily stop and wait for scavenging to finish.
Red Thread Games structures the journey around that tension between curiosity, resource needs and the pressure to keep pace with the only reliable protection still moving forward.
The scorched world is also populated by drones and automated war machines that continue operating long after their creators disappeared.
Night Reverses the Rule: Stay Close to the Robot
At night, the survival equation flips.
Once the sun goes down, temperatures across the wasteland plunge. The robot stops at a Sunshine Service Station to recharge, and the player needs to remain close enough to its mechanical body to avoid freezing.
Night becomes the time to establish camp, cook, process loot, craft new equipment, repair the robot and prepare for another day on the road.
Resources collected during the journey can be fed into a Sunshine Recycler and broken down into base components, which can then be used to create gear, tools and weapons.
Camp is not necessarily completely safe either. Strangers may arrive after dark, and Red Thread Games warns that appearances can be misleading.
The day-night rhythm therefore gives the robot two very different survival functions: shade while the sun is up and warmth once the world turns cold.
The Robot Can Be Upgraded, Painted and Eventually Become a Partner
The giant machine effectively serves as a constantly moving mobile base.
Players can repair damaged components and improve its capabilities through upgrades such as enhanced sensors and defensive systems.
Cosmetic customisation is available as well, including decals, personal touches and fresh paint.
Those upgrades are not only mechanical.
The relationship between the Nomad and the robot is one of Hello Sunshine's central narrative systems. Caring for the machine and strengthening it gradually unlocks additional forms of interaction.
The robot can eventually locate secrets, protect the player, lift them past obstacles and fight hostile war machines.
Red Thread Games also hints that the machine may eventually share stories of its own. One of the central questions posed by the developer asks what happens when “the last machine remembers your name.”
Little Guys Add Automation to the Survival Loop
The main robot is not the only machine available to the player. Hello Sunshine also includes smaller helper bots known as Little Guys.
Players can assemble and program these machines to take care of recurring tasks.
Little Guys can gather resources, map terrain, hunt prey and defend against drone attacks.
That introduces an automation layer to the survival loop, allowing the Nomad to delegate work as the journey gets longer and the needs of the camp expand.
Progression is also tied to the corporate systems of Sunshine, a company whose human empire has collapsed even though its automated infrastructure still functions.
Completing menial work can increase employee levels and grant digital currency or corporate benefits. Progress can unlock vending machines, restricted areas, rest facilities, self-care rooms and other workplace perks.
The result is a piece of corporate satire that continues operating even after the society it was designed to serve has disappeared.
Sunshine's Mystery Leads Toward the White Tower
Behind the survival mechanics sits the mystery driving the journey.
Sunshine promised humanity a brighter future, but what remains is a devastated wasteland populated by automated systems still following old instructions.
The player is recognised as the Final Employee, while service stations, drones, vending machines and other pieces of company infrastructure continue to function.
The destination is a white tower visible at the end of the road. Red Thread Games describes it as the place where the fate of what remains of the world will ultimately be decided.
The game deliberately leaves major questions unanswered: who the Final Employee really is, what the tower is for, why the robot continues travelling toward it and what exactly destroyed the world.
The 2026 story trailer strengthens that narrative side by giving more context to the Nomad, their sense of responsibility for what happened and their dependence on the machine travelling beside them.
Solo or Co-op Offers Different Perspectives on the Journey
Hello Sunshine can be played alone or with one other player.
Red Thread Games describes co-op as more than an extra pair of hands for gathering supplies. Two players can coordinate scavenging expeditions, trade resources and see how their partnership shapes the unfolding story.
Steam currently lists single-player, online co-op, LAN co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, Remote Play Together, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing.
Playtest registration also remains available directly through Steam, allowing users to request access and receive a notification when the developer admits additional participants.
For the final release, the only platform concretely announced at this stage is PC via Steam.
PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2026 now places the launch in 2027. Steam itself still displays “Coming soon,” meaning an exact date, month, price, preorder details and console versions remain unannounced.
Why This Matters
1) The robot is not an escort target—the player depends on it
Hello Sunshine reverses a familiar escort-game relationship. The enormous machine is far more powerful than the player and provides shade, warmth, protection and progression.
2) Day and night fundamentally change the survival rules
Heat forces players into the robot's shadow during the day, while the cold forces them back toward the machine once night falls.
3) The relationship with the machine is connected directly to gameplay
Repairing and upgrading the robot is not simply a base-building system. The developing bond opens new interactions and new forms of assistance.
4) The corporate satire keeps functioning after the apocalypse
Employee levels, workplace perks, automated service stations and menial corporate work survive long after almost everyone else has disappeared, turning the company itself into both a joke and part of the mystery.
