AGGRO: Thaumiel Mercenaries now has an official Steam page. Developed and published by AploveStudio, the indie sci-fi exploration third-person shooter turns anomalies into the player's own mercenary squad and sends them out to hunt and contain other abnormal entities.

Developer Alex / AploveStudio has openly cited GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE as a major influence on the combat direction, while also emphasizing that AGGRO is not intended to be a direct copy. Its identity branches out through simplified abilities, parrying, nonlinear exploration and surreal influences including Yume Nikki, SCP, ULTRAKILL and The Backrooms.

Anomalies Hunt Other Anomalies as an Armed Squad

AGGRO's central premise is straightforward: the player controls a squad composed of anomalies and explores unusual environments in pursuit of other dangerous or escaped entities.

Steam says potential targets include monsters, cryptids, rogue machines and more. Supernatural and science-fiction concepts therefore shape both the player's roster and the threats encountered across the world.

Exploration is designed to be nonlinear. Players move through strange areas while discovering lore, secrets and encounters that are not framed solely around clearing one combat arena after another.

The broader mission also includes containment and research, making its setup resemble an organization managing abnormal phenomena rather than a conventional extermination squad.

NIKKE Is a Major Influence, but the Combat Is Being Simplified

Game*Spark reports that Alex has been open about the influence of GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE on AGGRO.

The developer initially expected NIKKE to be a relatively conventional anime-style gacha game, only to become invested in its characters, lore, worldbuilding, music and combat.

AGGRO draws from that squad-shooter presentation. Development material shows a five-member formation, manual and automatic gunfire, cover usage and gauge-based abilities.

At the same time, Alex has stressed that the project is not meant to become a NIKKE duplicate.

One area being deliberately reduced is the number of passive effects and overlapping skill layers the player must constantly track. AGGRO does not mirror the same active/passive structure, while its gauge abilities are intended to have clearer effects and greater freedom in activation order.

A parry mechanic also helps separate its combat identity.

The connection should therefore be understood as mechanical inspiration, not an official relationship or collaboration with SHIFT UP.

Yume Nikki, SCP, ULTRAKILL and The Backrooms Shape Its Stranger Side

AGGRO's other influences come from a much more surreal direction.

Game*Spark identifies Yume Nikki and SCP among the inspirations behind its setting and tone, while earlier development coverage also pointed to ULTRAKILL and The Backrooms.

That mix fits AploveStudio's premise. The player is not limited to fighting ordinary humanoids, but encounters monsters, machines, abnormal bodies and spaces that can feel detached from normal reality.

Steam currently displays community-defined tags including Horror, Surreal, Mythology, Sci-fi, Aliens and Time Travel. Those tags should be distinguished from publisher-defined genres, as they are Steam user tags rather than official classifications.

The game's own feature list also explicitly promises plenty of lore and secrets, suggesting that exploring the setting is intended to matter beyond simply reaching the next firefight.

The Demo Is Already Available on Windows and Linux

Although the Steam release remains undated, AGGRO can already be played through its itch.io demo.

AploveStudio currently offers a Windows build of roughly 137 MB and a Linux build of roughly 127 MB.

The developer emphasizes that the project remains in early development. Several features are incomplete, and some visuals still use placeholder assets that are expected to be replaced.

The itch.io page also explicitly states that no generative AI was used.

Aplove published the official Demo Trailer on June 19, 2026, showing combat, anomaly characters, exploration and some of the project's more unusual creature designs.

For now, the itch.io demo is the most direct way to experience the concept while waiting for the full Steam version.

The Steam Page Adds Detail, but the Release Date Is Still Blank

Steam lists AploveStudio as both developer and publisher, with the release schedule still marked To be announced.

The currently listed Steam version targets Windows and supports English interface text and subtitles. No other language localization is currently shown.

Its minimum requirements list Windows 10, an 11th-generation Intel Core processor, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050, DirectX 12 and 300 MB of available storage.

The recommended-spec section, notably, is written as an in-universe joke using various “Subject” names and should not be treated as conventional recommended PC hardware.

Pricing, an exact launch date, possible Early Access plans and distribution of the final game through itch.io or additional platforms all remain unannounced.

Mature Themes and Body Horror Are Part of the Presentation

Both Steam and itch.io warn that the project contains material that may not suit every player.

The developer specifically lists suggestive and revealing outfits, blood and violence, body horror, and depictions of drug and alcohol use.

That fits AploveStudio's tendency to combine stylized characters with deliberately abnormal anatomy and creature concepts.

“Monster girl” therefore does not simply mean an anime character with a few creature accessories in AGGRO. Some of the designs lean much more directly into creature design and body horror.

No ESRB, PEGI or CERO rating is currently listed in the verified Steam information.

Why This Matters

1) The developer openly explains the inspirations

AploveStudio is clear about NIKKE's influence while also identifying exactly where AGGRO is trying to simplify or diverge.

2) Monsters are not only enemies

The player leads anomalies in order to capture other anomalies, giving containment a central role in the premise.

3) Its references come from very different directions

NIKKE informs the combat side, while Yume Nikki, SCP, ULTRAKILL and The Backrooms push the setting toward stranger territory.

4) The demo is playable long before the final release

Players can already test the concept rather than waiting for an undated Steam launch.
