The free Just Chessing Around demo is available for Windows PC through Steam. Developed by Belgian indie studio Cabbage Club, the game preserves recognizable chess-piece movement while adding roguelite progression, items, boss encounters, and boards capable of disrupting the player's strategy.
The demo originally launched on April 27, 2026, and was promoted again in August through Six One Demo Days. The full version is currently targeting the fourth quarter of 2026, although Steam still lists it as “Coming soon” without an exact date.

Chess Without the Usual Checkmate
Just Chessing Around does not ask players to protect a king and pursue a traditional checkmate. Every board functions as a combat arena in which the opposing force must be eliminated.
The player's army travels through a sequence of rooms in a medieval world. Enemy formations, unit types, and board conditions become more difficult until the run reaches the Dark King.
Pawns, rooks, knights, and bishops retain recognizable movement patterns. Conventional chess knowledge remains useful, but it cannot fully account for upgraded pieces or environments that change which routes are safe.
The demo combines the standard roster with an original unit named Jerry. The full game is expected to introduce additional custom pieces, including the Plague Doctor.
Five Buff Slots Can Redefine a Piece
Players collect upgrades during a run and may equip up to five at once. These effects can alter a piece until its abilities no longer fit the normal restrictions of chess.
One buff allows a rook to charge through pieces standing in its path. Another can greatly extend a knight's movement, creating attacks that would be impossible on a standard board.
Limited slots require players to decide whether to improve several unit types or build around one especially powerful combination. Complementary effects can produce a different army build during each run.
The current demo contains 37 buffs. Cabbage Club plans to add more upgrades, original pieces, environments, minibosses, and larger boss encounters to the complete game.
Bombs and Potions Bend the Rules Further
Alongside run-long buffs, players may carry two active items. These tools can rescue a failing position or break an enemy formation before it becomes dangerous.
Bombs can damage a selected area, while potions may summon ghostly pawns. The outcome of a battle therefore depends on more than the normal attack range of each unit.
Special enemies can also use similar systems. Minibosses may strengthen their armies, activate items, or interfere with the player's positioning, preventing these advantages from remaining exclusive to one side.
The demo includes seven items and one Underling battle. A shop added in an update allows players to purchase buffs and items or sell unwanted pieces to a Mimic.
The Board Is Part of the Threat
Just Chessing Around's environments are more than visual variations of the same grid. Individual tiles can conceal information, restrict movement, or remove pieces from battle.
Tall grass hides the identity of a unit standing inside it. Quicksand can swallow pieces that remain in one position, while tornadoes may move units away from their planned locations.
Other revealed hazards include water, spike traps, lightning, and slime. Every move must account for both enemy attack ranges and possible changes to the battlefield.
Pieces also communicate through emotional bubbles. They react to the player's choices and display distress when trapped in dangerous conditions.
Why This Matters
1) Chess becomes a foundation rather than a restriction
The pieces remain immediately recognizable, but buffs, items, and terrain prevent ordinary chess theory from providing every answer.
2) Army builds change from one run to another
Five buff slots force meaningful choices. A rook, knight, or original unit can become the center of an entirely different strategy.
3) The board can destroy either side's plan
Grass, quicksand, tornadoes, and traps can turn a safe position into a problem without requiring a direct enemy attack.
4) The demo already includes the main systems
Players can test upgrades, items, environments, the shop, an original piece, and an Underling encounter before the full release.
