The False Alice -Retold Tale- is now playable through a free Steam demo released on September 25, 2026. The official Itsuwari no Alice account announced the demo's availability, giving a wider audience its first opportunity to experience the visual-novel reconstruction of the story previously presented as a mobile RPG.
Developed by VISUAL ARTS / team Aeca, the full game is currently scheduled for November 2026. Rather than simply porting the mobile title, Retold Tale rebuilds its main story as a single-player visual novel with expanded scenarios, presentation, CGs, backgrounds, music and player decisions that can determine which characters survive and how the story ends.

Demo, Opening Movie and Steam

The Steam Demo Opens the Retold Version to the Public
The official demo became available on September 25, 2026.
Steam records it separately from the main application, while VISUAL ARTS / team Aeca remains the developer and VISUAL ARTS remains the publisher.
The demo supports Japanese, English and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitle options. Japanese is the supported full-audio language.
No verified official information currently specifies exactly how many chapters the demo includes, its total playtime or whether demo save data will carry into the finished game.
For now, the demo is best treated as an early opportunity to experience the visual-novel structure, central characters and opening portion of the rebuilt story without assuming any save-transfer or content-length features that have not been announced.
Three False Alices Must Decide Who Gets to Become Real
The world of The False Alice -Retold Tale- is known as the Trash Can, where failed fragments of stories are discarded.
These failed characters refer to themselves as Alters. One of the world's cruelest rules forces characters who share the same identity to fight until only one remains and can be recognized as the “real” version.
The amnesiac Teacher awakens in this world and encounters three failed versions of Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Prima is a Destroyer Alice driven by instinct and destructive impulses.
Secunda is the Hunter Alice, a cold and rational long-range fighter.
Tertia is the Sorcerer Alice, more fearful than the others yet still desperate to prove that she has value.
The three are supposed to kill one another, but Teacher's arrival creates an anomaly capable of changing that predetermined story.
Player Choices Now Sit at the Center of the Story
One of the biggest changes from the mobile format is Retold Tale's positioning as a branching visual novel.
Steam explains that players receive decisions at important moments, with those choices capable of affecting who survives, how relationships develop and which ending is reached.
Teacher is therefore more than a passive observer of the three Alices.
The player can challenge the world's rule that only one Alice is allowed to live and attempt to write a version of the story in which death is no longer the inevitable outcome.
That idea also fits the “Retold Tale” name: this is not simply an archive of the mobile game, but a retelling whose direction can change according to player decisions.
Retold Tale Rebuilds the 2019 Mobile RPG
The original Itsuwari no Alice launched on iOS and Android on October 3, 2019.
It was presented as a dark-fantasy novel RPG featuring “failed” versions of characters drawn from familiar fairy tales.
Regular new-content additions were stopped in 2023, after which the team continued operating the service while revenue could cover ongoing server costs.
That situation became one of the reasons behind the creation of Retold Tale.
VISUAL ARTS and team Aeca wanted to preserve the Itsuwari no Alice story in a format that would not always depend on the lifespan of an online server.
Crowdfunding was then used to rebuild the game with new scenarios, additional character expressions and poses, new event CGs, additional BGM and new backgrounds.
The project ultimately exceeded 1,280% of its original target, with total support passing ¥64 million.
Prima, Secunda, Tertia and Alter Alice Receive New Focus
The official Retold Tale website reintroduces four Alices with more detailed characterization.
Prima, voiced by Aoi Yuki, is an Alice whose destructive impulses form an uncomfortable part of her true nature.
Secunda, voiced by Chiwa Saito, is a highly rational Hunter whose failure is tied to leaving someone important behind in order to survive.
Tertia, voiced by Misato Fukuen, is a Sorcerer who struggles to trust others after being exploited and betrayed.
Alter Alice, voiced by Inori Minase, is an Alice who never returned from her dream. She searches for an ending that was never written for her and ultimately takes up her sword to force her story to continue.
The new presentation connects each tragedy more directly to why that version of Alice was labeled a “failure.”
Alias Arrived as the Opening Theme Before the Demo
Before the demo's release, The False Alice -Retold Tale- also unveiled a new opening movie.
The theme song, “Alias,” is performed by Isekaijoucho, with Nanahoshi Kangengakudan / Riku Iwami handling the songwriting.
The opening movie was released on September 18, exactly one week before the Steam demo.
It provides a strong look at the new game's characters and dark fairy-tale atmosphere, but the current news itself is primarily about the playable demo rather than the video.
For that reason, the opening remains a supporting embed while the article's 12-image grid uses Steam gameplay screenshots, keeping the primary visual material aligned with the demo now available to play.
The Full Game Is Currently Scheduled for November 2026
The official website currently lists November 2026 as the full release window.
A specific day has not been announced, and pricing for both Steam and the listed retail-disc format remains TBD.
The official site currently lists Windows 11 64-bit, Intel Core i5 or later, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB VRAM, 4 GB available storage, 1920×1080 resolution and DirectX 11 in its specification section.
Steam currently displays a slightly different minimum configuration, including a Core i3 and 4 GB RAM.
Since the official site also states that specifications remain subject to change, final requirements may still be adjusted before launch.
The main Steam game is already open for wishlisting.
Why This Matters
1) The mobile story is being preserved beyond server dependency
One of the project's central goals is to ensure Itsuwari no Alice can continue existing as a standalone work even if its original online service eventually ends.
2) Players have more direct influence over the Alices' fates
Steam explicitly states that decisions can alter survival, relationships and endings rather than functioning as purely cosmetic dialogue choices.
3) The reconstruction includes newly created material
Retold Tale adds scenarios, event CGs, backgrounds, BGM and expanded character presentation instead of simply transferring old assets.
4) The demo lets players evaluate the changes before launch
With the full game still scheduled for November, players can now see how the old RPG format has been translated into a visual novel.
