Phantom PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE officially returned to modern PC through Steam on September 4, 2026. NITRO ORIGIN has brought the visual novel, originally released in 2000, to the platform with Japanese, English and Simplified Chinese text support.

The release also restores an important piece of Nitroplus history: Phantom was the company's first title and Gen Urobuchi's debut work as a scenario writer. The Steam version is not a newly rebuilt remake, however, but a port of the 2013 Windows release that already incorporated material developed through the anime adaptation.

Gen Urobuchi's Debut Work Returns to Modern PC

Phantom PHANTOM OF INFERNO first launched on PC in 2000 as Nitroplus's inaugural title. It was also Gen Urobuchi's professional debut as a scenario writer, years before his name became associated with numerous anime, game and novel projects.

The Steam version makes that early work accessible on a modern Windows environment without rebuilding it as a new remake. NITRO ORIGIN instead preserves the version that evolved through several releases over more than a decade.

Steam Uses the 2013 Windows Version

The title has a long release history. After the original PC game in 2000, a DVD-PG version followed in 2001 and a PlayStation 2 edition arrived in 2003. The TV anime Phantom Requiem for the Phantom aired in 2009 and added original episodes.

An Xbox 360 remake released in 2012 incorporating elements from the anime. That version was then fully ported back to Windows in 2013, and the 2013 release is the content base for the 2026 Steam version.

NITRO ORIGIN specifically says the Steam port does not introduce new story content compared with that version.

Anime Designs and Cast Are Part of the Game

The anime's legacy is directly visible in the version now available. Character designs and graphics were revised to align with the TV adaptation, while its voice cast also performs the game roles.

Original episodes developed for the anime were incorporated through the Xbox 360 edition before carrying over to the 2013 Windows version and ultimately Steam.

That places the new release in an unusual position: it remains the Phantom visual novel, but its presentation reflects years of development across both game and anime adaptations.

Zwei and Ein Are Drawn Into Inferno

The story follows a Japanese teenager traveling alone in the United States when he is dragged into the criminal underworld. A series of assassinations targeting mafia leaders has fueled rumors about the mysterious organization Inferno and its most dangerous assassin, known as Phantom.

The teenager eventually encounters Phantom and discovers that the feared assassin is a girl around his own age named Ein. After having his memories erased, he is trained as an assassin under the name Zwei.

What begins as a struggle to survive gradually pulls him deeper into Inferno's conspiracies and into a complicated bond with Ein.

English Is Now Officially Supported on Steam

One of the biggest accessibility changes is the inclusion of Japanese, English and Simplified Chinese in a single official Steam release.

All three are supported for interface and text/subtitles, while full voice-over remains Japanese-only. Indonesian is not listed as a supported language.

NITRO ORIGIN has also launched an official English product page, giving international players direct access to the game's story, character, specification and release information.

Staff and Voice Cast Preserve the Anime-Era Identity

Alongside Gen Urobuchi, the scenario credits include Shogo Yasukawa and Takashi Morimiya, with Kimi Yanoguchi credited for the original character concepts.

The Japanese cast includes Miyu Irino as Zwei / Reiji Azuma and Ayahi Takagaki as Ein / Phantom. Aya Hisakawa voices Claudia McCunnen, Miyuki Sawashiro plays Cal Devens, and Ami Koshimizu voices Mio Fujieda.

Other roles include Isshin Chiba as Scythe Master, Akeno Watanabe as Lizzie Garland, Susumu Chiba as Raymond McGuire and Hideo Ishikawa as Isaac Wisemel. Drei's voice actor remains deliberately undisclosed in the official material.

Playable at Tokyo Game Show 2026

Following the Steam launch, Nitroplus will also bring Phantom to Tokyo Game Show 2026 at Makuhari Messe.

A playable build will be available at the Nitroplus booth in Hall 9, Indie Game Area C-55, alongside Dolls Nest. The event runs from September 17–21, with business and public attendance following TGS's official schedule.

For Phantom, the showcase provides an opportunity to try the Steam version only weeks after its commercial return.

Why This Matters

1) A major starting point in Gen Urobuchi's career is readily accessible again

The game is not new, but its historical relevance comes from being both Urobuchi's debut and Nitroplus's first title.

2) The Steam version preserves the game-anime hybrid edition

The port uses the 2013 build that already incorporates anime-era character designs, cast and additional episodes.

3) English and Simplified Chinese broaden official access

Players can now experience the work in three officially supported text languages without requiring unofficial translation patches for those languages.

4) It is being archived rather than radically rebuilt

NITRO ORIGIN keeps the 2013 content intact, making this release a modern way to access that historical version.
