Dressmaker officially launched on Steam on September 21, 2026, turning the actual process of making clothing into the center of a cozy crafting simulation. Developed by Cozy Lives and published by Free Lives, the game is available for Windows and macOS.

Instead of selecting finished dresses from a menu, players work through the construction process themselves: choosing fabric, designing, positioning patterns, cutting material, sewing panels together and decorating the finished garment. By launch, the project had surpassed 400,000 wishlists, a dramatic expansion from the small prototype that first attracted the community.

This Is More Than a Dress-Up Game

Dressmaker's defining idea is how much of the clothing-making process becomes interactive.

Players begin by choosing materials including cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. Designs and colors are then worked out in a sketchbook before pattern pieces are arranged directly on the fabric.

That arrangement is not purely decorative. Steam explains that whether a pattern is aligned with the grain or cut on the bias influences how the material appears on the finished dress.

The fabric is then cut and taken to a sewing machine, where individual sections are stitched together into a complete garment.

The finishing stage allows buttons, bows, appliqué, lace trims and other accessories to be placed wherever the player wants.

The dressmaker fantasy therefore comes from actually assembling clothing rather than simply selecting a completed outfit.

Customer Commissions and Freeform Designs Work Side by Side

Dressmaker is not a directionless sandbox.

Townsfolk arrive with requests shaped by their personal tastes and events in their social calendars. Players must understand those requirements and create custom dresses that fit the occasion.

Completing commissions rewards reputation and coin, forming part of the game's broader progression.

Players are not permanently tied to client briefs, however. The off-the-rack system allows completely original designs to be created and displayed in the shop window for sale.

That leaves two complementary approaches: solve defined design challenges or experiment freely with fabrics, patterns and accessories.

And for the feature that truly determines whether a cozy game has priorities in order, Steam confirms that the shop cat can be petted.

Around 35 Hours of Story and Thousands of Material Combinations

The developers have provided a substantial picture of the launch version's scale.

Story commissions alone are estimated at approximately 35 hours, excluding time spent creating off-the-rack dresses.

The launch build contains more than 150 dress pieces, 450 fabrics and 350 accessories.

Combining garment shapes, materials, colors, cutting orientation and freely placed decorations means the range of possible results goes far beyond those raw item totals.

The team also says those assets were created in-house by hand or through digital drawing tools.

The global base price was announced as US$14.99, with regional pricing and a 10% launch discount. In Japan, Game*Spark reported a standard price of ¥1,923 and a launch price of ¥1,730.

From a Small Prototype to More Than 400,000 Wishlists

Dressmaker did not begin as a large production.

The concept started as a collaboration between Jonathan Hau-Yoon and Sabrina Becker, built around an interest in costume design and the craft of making clothing.

An early prototype then gained significant attention online. Launch materials state that the prototype passed 100,000 downloads, giving Free Lives a reason to expand the idea into full production.

Development continued under Cozy Lives with a dedicated team. Meydän composed the music, while Kerstin Hall wrote the story and dialogue.

Community momentum continued through 2026. Steam Community posts recorded 100,000 wishlists in June and more than 200,000 by late July, while launch materials ultimately reported over 400,000 wishlists.

That path from a small experimental build to hundreds of thousands of prospective players became an important part of Dressmaker's pre-release story.

Free Updates and an Online Challenge Mode Are Already in Development

Version 1.0 is not the end of development.

Cozy Lives says the immediate weeks after launch will focus on fixing reported bugs while adding a selection of new fabrics and accessories.

For larger updates, the team has already begun work on an Online Challenge Mode, intended to let dressmakers compare designs and vote for their favorites.

Transparent fabrics are also being developed. They were left out of the launch build because layered transparency on double-sided meshes still needed additional rendering work.

Steam Deck support is another target. The developers say the game already runs quickly on the device but want to provide proper controller support.

The team has also confirmed that mobile and Switch ports are being planned following repeated community requests. No release dates, pricing or specific Switch version have been announced.

Japanese Support Is Available From Launch

Steam currently lists three main supported languages for Dressmaker: English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

All three are listed with interface, full audio and subtitle support.

That gives the Japanese release more than translated menus and text, with Steam also explicitly listing Japanese audio.

Indonesian is not currently among the supported languages.

On PC, the minimum Windows requirements include Windows 10 or later, an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen processor, 8 GB RAM, Intel UHD 630-class graphics or better, DirectX 11 and around 1 GB of storage.

On Mac, the listed minimum starts at Apple M1 hardware with 8 GB RAM and 1 GB of storage.

Why This Matters

1) Sewing itself is the mechanic, not merely the theme

Choosing fabric, arranging patterns, cutting, stitching and decorating are all directly playable steps.

2) Creativity still has structure

Commissions provide defined design goals, while off-the-rack dresses give players room to experiment without a client brief.

3) The content pool is substantial for a niche crafting simulation

More than 150 dress pieces, 450 fabrics, 350 accessories and roughly 35 hours of commissions provide a large foundation for different creations.

4) Development continues beyond launch

Online challenges, transparent fabrics, improved controller support and mobile/Switch ports are already planned, though none has a specific date yet.

Closing

Dressmaker takes the fantasy of running a tailoring practice and grounds it in the physical process of choosing fabric, cutting patterns, operating a sewing machine and finishing garments. After growing from a small prototype into a game with more than 400,000 wishlists, the full release is now available through Steam.

Cozy Lives is also continuing development beyond launch. Online Challenge Mode, transparent fabrics, better Steam Deck controller support and mobile/Switch ports are all planned, but none of those additions currently has a specific release date.
