MoonHack arrived at Tokyo Game Show 2026 with a playable build that revealed a different side of the project than its early cyber-noir presentation might suggest. Rather than focusing primarily on the visual-novel section, ASTRA let attendees play its 3D rhythm-action sequences, combining movement, jumping, timed actions, route awareness and music-driven inputs.

A September 19 hands-on report from Denfaminicogamer provides a closer look at how the system works in practice. Its basic controls are simple, but high-speed courses, collectible hearts, obstacles, timed actions and enemy attacks force players to process the screen while staying aware of the music. 4Gamer also confirms that these action sequences remain connected to the narrative, with character conversations continuing during gameplay.

Three Simple Inputs Quickly Become a Busy Challenge

At its most basic level, MoonHack's rhythm action can be explained through three functions: move, jump and perform an action.

The character continuously runs along a 3D course while the player adjusts positioning to collect hearts spread across the route. That sounds straightforward on a flat track, but courses soon curve, rise and fall while collectibles begin appearing in the air.

Jumping therefore serves more than simply avoiding obstacles. Players must also decide when to leave the ground to grab elevated hearts without losing track of the next route element.

Denfaminicogamer describes how the game's speed turns individually simple tasks into something considerably more demanding once they overlap. Its reporter missed several hearts, collided with obstacles and ultimately received a D Rank on the first attempt.

4Gamer describes a comparable control flow on an Xbox controller: the character automatically runs forward, the left stick handles lateral movement, and jump and action inputs are used to clear or destroy incoming threats.

Action Is Part of Both Rhythm and Scoring

MoonHack does not stop at collectible routing.

Certain obstacles can be destroyed through the action input. At the same time, a clock-like timing indicator appears on screen, asking players to press the relevant button at the appropriate moment.

Successful timing does more than clear the path. It also contributes to the performance evaluation.

Later in a sequence, enemies can appear and fire attacks toward the player, dividing attention between route positioning, hearts, obstacles, timed actions and incoming threats.

That gives the rhythm-action layer significantly more structure than a brief interlude between visual-novel chapters.

Music Guides Jumps, Actions and Even Enemy Attacks

One of the most important details in Denfaminicogamer's hands-on report is the way multiple events are aligned with the beat.

Jump and action opportunities are positioned to follow the song's rhythm. 4Gamer also highlights the sound effects used when collecting notes, which are designed to fit musically into the track.

Even enemy attacks can arrive in time with the song.

A player who focuses too heavily on visual information may lose the rhythmic cues. At the same time, concentrating only on the music can result in missed hearts or incoming attacks going unnoticed.

MoonHack therefore asks players to combine visual and auditory information rather than treating its music as a background layer.

4Gamer describes the design as emphasizing the exhilaration of continuously running with a song rather than the pressure of executing a conventional rhythm-game chart with absolute precision.

Rhythm Action Remains Part of the Story

The action sequences are not treated as a disconnected mode with no narrative purpose.

4Gamer confirms that character conversations continue during gameplay. The action itself is positioned as part of the story's presentation, with narrative scenes and 3D sequences designed to complement each other.

That structure fits MoonHack's premise.

In 2125, AI has optimized work, taxation, romance, emotion and even decisions about the future. Girls whose “humanity” has been recorded as a crime enter the digital world and use songs as a form of hacking power.

Because music functions as a weapon within the fiction, turning it directly into movement and action mechanics helps reduce the separation between narrative concept and gameplay.

In 4Gamer's TGS interview, Astro Production representative Tomo Ariga also said Sayonara Wild Hearts was one of the inspirations when the team explored ways to combine music with high-speed running action.

The TGS Booth Adds an S-Rank Challenge and 13 Trading Cards

MoonHack is located in Hall 9, booth 09-C53, within TGS2026's Indie Game Corner.

In addition to the playable build, the booth distributes 13 different trading-card designs. Denfaminicogamer reports that visitors receive one random card, with additional rewards available through the demo.

An official MoonHack post on September 16 explains the trial challenge: playing earns one card, while the count increases to two with one S Rank, three with two S Ranks, and four if all three sections receive S Rank.

When the general booth-visitor card reported by Denfaminicogamer is included, one visit and full trial can therefore produce up to five cards.

Visitors who show that MoonHack has been added to their Steam wishlist can also receive an original sticker.

There is one major update to the dates printed in the original promotional material. Tokyo Game Show 2026 was initially scheduled for September 17–21, but organizers later canceled the entire September 21 program due to the approaching Typhoon No. 25. September 20 continues, although several exhibitors have adjusted their schedules.

Development Is Around 40 Percent With a 2027 Target

MoonHack remains some distance from completion.

During 4Gamer's TGS interview, the team estimated overall development progress at around 40 percent.

The visual-novel portion has reportedly grown to roughly twice the volume originally estimated, while the game is planned to feature full Japanese voice acting.

Pricing is still being adjusted, and the publicly announced release window remains simply 2027, without a specific month or day.

Steam currently lists ASTRA as both developer and publisher, with Japanese interface, subtitles and full audio. English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese are listed for interface and subtitles.

No console platform has been announced in the verified official product information.

Why This Matters

1) The rhythm action is clearly more than a small bonus

The TGS build shows a system with its own scoring, timing, obstacles, enemy attacks, movement and ranking.

2) Music serves both mechanical and narrative roles

Songs are a hacking force in the story, while gameplay requires players to actively follow the beat for movement and actions.

3) The action and visual-novel layers are not isolated

Dialogue continues during 3D sequences, allowing action to function as part of the narrative presentation.

4) The TGS build provides a much clearer picture of the game's identity

MoonHack's premise, characters and music had previously been easier to focus on. This hands-on build shows how the idea of “hacking through song” translates into actual play.

Closing
