Six Years Behind IzanagiGames' Largest Live-Action Project

According to Shinsuke Umeda, the thinking behind AKIBA LOST began after IzanagiGames completed Death Come True in 2020.

The team immediately began asking what kind of live-action game could reach a wider global audience. That process grew into roughly six years of development involving more than 200 cast and staff members.

Its finished playtime exceeds 20 hours, making it a live-action undertaking on a scale IzanagiGames had never previously attempted.

Four Ideas Became the Foundation of AKIBA LOST

Following Death Come True, the team settled on four core goals.

The first was partnering with a television company to dramatically raise both the quality and quantity of video and photography. The second was placing the story in Akihabara, a meeting point for Japanese games, anime, idols, and other subcultures.

The third was building an ensemble story around several distinctive perspectives. The fourth was turning that concept into a genuine 20-plus-hour suspense game rather than a short interactive movie.

Roughly 100,000 Photos and More Than 20 Hours of Footage

The scale extends well beyond the headcount.

The official site says roughly 100,000 still images were shot for the project, while the total amount of recorded video exceeds 20 hours. Individual scenes can be presented through either photography or live-action footage.

That material is paired with a 360° View system that can place players directly into the viewpoint of the character they are controlling.

Seven Perspectives Uncover the Akihabara Mystery

The story begins with Daiki Shinjo, a game creator who announces a new title based on an unsolved case in which six girls disappeared from Akihabara 13 years earlier.

He becomes connected to six women representing different parts of the district's culture: maid Aoi Shinjo, streamer Yukimi Kurahashi, food writer Moe Kurosu, underground idol Kokone Nagato, shrine maiden Chihiro Jimbo, and cosplayer Wakana Yusa.

The zapping system lets players move between perspectives during the same stretch of time, while decisions made in one storyline can affect what happens elsewhere.

The Nippon TV Drama Was Built to Support the Game

AKIBA LOST also received a six-episode television drama broadcast by Nippon TV in early 2026.

Umeda stresses that the series was not simply a separate adaptation created to advertise the game. It was produced specifically to maximize the game's quality, and the drama's story is already contained within AKIBA LOST's broader narrative.

The project also won the Japan Game Awards 2025 – Future Division, where it stood out as the only live-action title among that year's winners.

Demos Are Available Ahead of the September 17 Release

The Steam demo arrived in June, followed by PS5 on August 20 and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on August 27, 2026.

The demo covers the story through the morning of Day 1 in the seven-day narrative and lets players experience all characters available during that section. Save data can carry into the full release.

In Japan, the digital edition costs ¥5,500, physical PS5/Switch/Switch 2 copies are ¥6,480, and the Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at ¥8,250.

Why This Matters

1) The production scale is unusual for an FMV adventure

More than 200 people, six years of work, roughly 100,000 photographs, and tens of hours of footage put AKIBA LOST well beyond the scale normally associated with a compact interactive movie.

2) Multiple viewpoints are part of the mystery design

Choices made from one perspective can affect other characters, turning the zapping system into more than a simple protagonist selector.

3) The TV drama and game were developed as one project

Rather than adapting the game after production, the drama was designed from the outset to expand the live-action material and overall production quality available to AKIBA LOST.
